The Competition Commission of India on Monday, November 18, imposed a penalty of over Rs 213.14 crore against Meta in connection with data sharing practices under WhatsApp’s 2021 privacy policy update for Indian users that had sparked outrage and was eventually deferred.

The watchdog concluded that the 2021 policy update by WhatsApp on a "take-it-or-leave-it" basis constitutes an imposition of unfair conditions.
